The Pinery, a master-planned community located within the town limits of Parker, is an up-scale enclave of custom homes built on large lots set among towering Ponderosa pines. The community has 27 holes of golf at The Pinery Country Club, a racquet club with night lighted tennis courts, of which three are indoors; swimming pools; a club house with restaurant; the Colorado Horse Park, an equestrian center; a bird sanctuary and two parks operated by Douglas County. Bingham Lake Park is a great place to picnic, fish, and hike, and is the location of the annual Pinery Picnic. Pinery Park features several athletic fields, two volleyball courts, picnic areas and a playground. Other annual events in The Pinery include the Pinery Art Show, a community garage sale and a plant sale. Pinery residents care about their neighborhoods and come together for social events and beautification projects, including on-going work on the bird sanctuary. There are a number of Home Owners' Associations dedicated to preserving the quality of life that The Pinery offers. Children living in The Pinery attend schools in the Douglas County School District, the fourth largest district in Colorado. Mountain View Elementary School is located in The Pinery. The city of Parker offers a variety of classes, activities and sports leagues through the Parks and Recreation Department. Parker's Chamber of Commerce sponsors many local events including the Parker Country Festival and the Parker Christmas Carriage Parade. Downtown Parker features the new Parker Station with commercial centers, offices, shops and restaurants. Parker, lit by its trademark five-globe street lamps, is about 20 miles south of Denver and is home to about 35,000 people.
